An order of character with some grit on the side

I have way too much fin with these blog entry titles. But you have to admit that it fits. The Senators have shown that when the chips are down, the can pick themselves up and come at a team hard.

The Senators were down 3 goals and managed to get back into the game. Sure they only picked up one point in the overtime loss, but they came back from 3 goals behind! When was the last time they've done that? We saw goals from Daniel Alfredsson  and Jason Spezza after a longish drought for both.

The overtime heartbreaker was not Spezza's fault. The back pass while zigging would have been a great play had Filip Kuba been in position. If the play had worked, Atlanta's Little would have had to either follow Kuba (leaving Spezza in the open), or would have been caught following Spezza (leaving Kuba to rush in with the puck). As it turned out Kuba was out of position.

Another downside was the play of Brian Elliott who was unimpressive. Is it me or was Elliot once again playing a little too deep in his net? Maybe it's just me comparing him to Pascal Leclaire who plays waayyy out of his net. On the upside, the Senators seem to score more when Elliott is tending. Coincidence?

Another thing I hope the Sens learned is that it doesn't pay to protect a lead. The Thrashers went into lead protection mode in the 3rd period and couldn;t stave off the Senators' attack. This is a lesson that needs to be pounded in again and again: when you have the opposition on the ropes, go for the jugular.

Overall, I was very happy with the way the Senators crawled out of the muck. They will need that confidence for the road games ahead. The Senators are facing Western Conference teams, and will need all the amm,o in their clip to come out with even a .500 from the road trip.

GO SENS GO!!
