Shake-up
First, my apologies for the long absence. I do have a life outside hockey, and it does at times keep me from ranting online. Speaking of which...it's that time.
Why not?
Some members of the press have projected the Sens season performance based on their performance at the end of last season when coach Clouston replaced Hartsburg. The results: 101 points at the end of the season. The Ottawa press seems dubious, and I have to wonder why. The Senators slumped badly in the last two seasons, finishing the 94 and 83 points. Prior to that, the Senators were a plus 100 teams for four straight years Even prior to the Dany Heatley era. Murray has brought in what I believe to be ample firepower for the Senators to once again become the scoring machine they once were. I predict they will top 100 this year. And if they don't it'll be by a hair... a blonde one.

Bryan Murray has been a successful coach to the Sens, and is therefore no fool. The moves toward a final line-up are showing what most of us could already see. Zach Smith, while good in the pre-season, was way behind Regin, and a coach can salt only so many new players in his line-up if he wants to maintain a balance with experience. Schubert was placed on waivers which means any team can grab his $900K salary within 24 hours... unlikely. So off to Binghamton with him. For his size, Schoobie doesn't throw his weight around much and, while he says his natural position is on the blue line, he has never impressed there. The one remaining surprise was Matt Carkner who, while good, did not strike me as a exceptional. Perhaps Clouston's perspective is more of a "denfenseman's defenseman" for the blue line. Picard participates much more in the offense, but Carkner does play better in his own zone. Something to ponder. |
